The German “Panzerschiffe” Admiral Graf Spee. The photograph is from a contemporary post card with the date of mailing of 11-6-38. This dates the photograph as being taken between 1936, when the ship was completed, and 1938. The photograph shows the crew attending to the ship’s connection at a mooring buoy. The ship participated in the first major surface engagement of WW II when she encountered three RN cruisers in the South Atlantic in December 1939. On 17 December the crew scuttled the vessel near the entrance to the harbor of Montevideo. The wreckage of the ship still remains where she sank in shallow water. It is reported that attempts are now being made to salvage small portions of the ship. The International Naval Research Organization is a non-profit organization dedicated to the encouragement of the study of naval vessels and their histories, principally in the era of iron and steel warships (about 1860 to date). Its purpose is to provide information and a means of contact for those interested in warships. The principal activity of INRO for the last 45 years has been the publication of a quarterly journal, Warship International, recognized internationally as the leading and most authoritative publication in the field. Auxiliary services include a Book Service, offering a 10 per cent discount on current naval books, and the Photo Service, which provides warship photos at a nominal price. |
